How does it feel to be back in Boston?
It honestly feels great. I believe I'm around a great organization and group of guys where my talents and skills fit in perfectly with the team. I know I can be an asset to this team as we work to gain a championship this year and more to come.
From: Chris 23, Ohio
Delonte Maurice West (born July 26, 1983, in Washington, D.C.) is an American professional basketball player currently with the Boston Celtics for the second time in his career.
The mission of the Delonte West Foundation 501c(3) is to utilize the disciplines of art and sports to instill skills in youth that to help them develop positive habits and life skills, deal with challenges, and overcome adversity.
Through art and expression, youth will learn how to channel their anger and aggression into positive, productive energy.
Through sports, youth will be taught the importance of teamwork and healthy active lifestyles.
Youth will be taught the importance of self control, effective communication, and other life skills that will prepare them to future educational and professional pursuits.
The Delonte West Foundation also reaches out and works with children dealing with BiPolar Disorders.
Delonte hosts free basketball clinics for inner city kids in Philadelphia, Maryland, Washington D.C. and will be expanding to Boston. These free clinics provided more than 500 kids with the opportunity to work on their basketball, sportsmanship, and teamwork skills, while building self-esteem both on and off the court.
Because Delonte is an artist, he wants to focus much of his efforts on arts education and effective communication skills on and off the court.
He believes that art offers a way for children to express themselves and escape from many of the world's pressures. He will provide funding to arts education programs in Washington D.C., Boston and Philadelphia and take part in hands-on programming to ensure schools keep art as a focus.
Delonte has also opened its doors to female youth to have the opportunity to play sports or participate in the foundations Step and Cheerleading camps.
Delonte has furthered his foundation in efforts to helping youth in the Caribbean. Since 2005 The Delonte West Foundation has worked with the RuJohn Foundation to bring school supplies for children in Kingston and Montego Bay Jamaica. In conjunction with the RuJohn Foundation Delonte puts on annual basketball camps in Kingston and Montego Bay Jamaica. He has raised money in order to donate basketball courts to the schools.
Delonte works and speaks with Highschool basketball and sport teams on the importance of how to handle stressful situations and restrain from anger in life and the court. His efforts has reached out to children battling with Bi-Polar Disorder and to refocus the negative energy into positive efforts.
In addition, Delonte is working with the Boys and Girls Clubs to create an incentive program that rewards children for making positive decisions. Members will have the opportunity to receive incentive items based on their personal successes in school, at home, and at the community center.
As a professional basketball player, Delonte West realizes the impact he can make in the community and wants to strategically make a difference in the communities that have helped him get to where he is today.
The Delonte West Foundation strives to make an impact in the lives of children through education, health and the arts.
Delonte West participates in annual sponsorship with the RuJohn Foundation. This is based in the rural areas of Jamaica including Kingston, Ocho Rios, and Montego Bay and provide tools and equipment necessary for education for the children in the inner cities. The foundation's mission is to teach and challenge the kids to overcome life situations and guide them into decision making skills through the sports arena.
